Who are Groupon?

Groupon is a trusted local marketplace where consumers go to buy services and experiences that make life more interesting and deliver boundless value. Founded in Chicago, Illinois in 2008, Groupon now operates globally in 13 countries, serves millions of customers in more than 500 cities, and employs 2500+ people worldwide.

Groupon successfully reported their 2020 base year GHG assessment and 2021 assessment following the GHG Protocolframework, producing high-quality, auditable reports.

What they wanted

Before approaching Ecometrica, Groupon had previously been tracking and reporting their sustainability data manually with spreadsheets and other tools as part of their ambition to measure and manage their carbon footprint. However, they found these methods had limited reporting capabilities and were time and resource intensive. Groupon needed to find a more efficient and complete solution to attain their reporting goals.

Groupon approached Ecometrica for help on its first greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment in 2021. They wanted to report their scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as their more complex scope 3 emissions, which included: business travel, water use, estimation of deliveries, cloud servers and waste. They also needed more coordinated and robust data across their global sites and to reduce their time spent collecting and reporting data across the business.

How we helped

Using Ecometrica’s Platform, Groupon could now automatically and instantly calculate their scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. With the on-hand support of analysts, Ecometrica helped provide Groupon better understanding and scoping of transparent data collection across their global sites.

The Business Intelligence module allowed Groupon to analyse and make sense of their data through visualizations of their largest sources of emissions, site comparisons, energy consumption, emission intensity per employee and more. Groupon successfully reported their 2020 base year GHG assessment and 2021 assessment following the GHG Protocol framework, producing high-quality, auditable reports.

Groupon found that the main advantages of using Ecometrica’s software were:

On-hand support from dedicated sustainability analysts

Instant calculations for scopes 1, 2 and 3 including all scope 3 categories

Integrated Business Intelligence module illustrating data of emissions, site comparisons.

Enables seamless data collection across global sites

Reporting to GHG Protocol framework with ease

Fully auditable output
