Enhancing lone worker safety

See how WSP ensures the safety of their lone workers with software

WSP is one of the world’s leading engineering professional services firms, employing 66000 with over 9000 of those based in the UK. The Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) team, who sit within the Local Government business unit at WSP, switched from using a fob device to EcoOnline's lone worker app, powered by StaySafe, to gain better hub functionality and easier allocation of licences between users.

THE IMPACT

A 24-hour lone worker monitoring solution that is tailored to meet the needs of Thomson Environmental Consultants.

“Easy to use with enhanced functionality to our previous system. The monitoring hub is sleeker and easier to use than our previous one. The fall detection and non-movement alerts are great functionalities that aren’t always available with other systems. Also more cost effective than our previous provider.”

Brynjar Myre, Principal Engineer, HCC contract

The Story

Their lone workers face several hazards, in particular working on highways close to moving vehicles, working often in remote locations, and travelling considerable distances to and from site.

“We want to ensure our staff always have access to emergency support when lone working”   explains Brynjar Myre, Principal Engineer on the HCC contract.

“Prior to launching lone worker software, we had a mix of personally assigned devices, as well as shared pool devices for teams. Having an app-based system means a user can be assigned a licence remotely and staff don’t have to come into an office to pick up a device.”

As well as a solution that could be shared between users, they also wanted a system that was easy to use and provided monitoring support.

Another draw for WSP was the onboarding process. At EcoOnline, we have a dedicated Customer Success Team who work with you to ensure that you get the most from your investment in the Lone Worker solution.

“We were able to arrange training in a timely manner and all the sessions were delivered in a professional way. Our Customer Success Manager has also been a great help. He is always available and responds to queries straight away. He has even helped us with ad hoc training sessions and pushed through enhanced functionality.”

Alerts raised within the hub can be monitored in-house or outsourced to one of our specialist monitoring partners.

“We use the hub to monitor activity in-house as well as utilising an alarm response service from Fenix” explains Brynjar.

“We also run monthly reports for all users, and we are keen for individual teams to do the same. The CPD, NRSWA and Data Team have already engaged with monitoring the performance of their respective teams using the insights that are available in the hub.”

“We decided that checking in every hour is the safest option for our staff, considering the risk that comes with working near the highway. Staff have worked up a routine where they check in before driving and again when they reach site. Rarely do they drive or stay at site for more than one hour, so this works well. We now have peace of mind that staff are safe throughout the day and feedback from the team has been really positive.”
